This course focuses on two defining epochs in the Middle Ages critical for understanding the development of European civilization: The Crusades, the series of religious military expeditions to conquer and retain the Holy Land between 1095 and 1291; and The Black Death, the devastating outbreak of the bubonic plague in Asia, Europe, and North Africa during the years 1346-1353 that killed approximately one-half of Europe’s population. For both, the course examines origins, causes, major events and key individuals as well respective conceptualizations and impact on culture, religion, politics, and society. A consideration of how both the Crusades and the Black Death continue to reverberate and shape understanding in modern times. Extensive use of primary source readings.
